About Silwer

“Il Divo, eat your heart out – these stars of SA’s Got Talent have captivated audiences with their angelic voices.”  You magazine

SILWER consists of the brothers Willem and Louis.

Their great success in the 2009 SABC 2 TV production of SA’s Got Talent started a new exciting chapter in their singing career.

These former staff members of the Stellenbosch University (lecturer and IT guy) excelled as part of the final episode of that season of SA’s Got Talent, where a rumoured ten million people watched them sing. Their success had great media interest as a result, with articles in You/Huisgenoot  and newspapers, radio interviews, as well as a Top Billing feature. They’ve also been on Fiesta (2011) and Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) has recently started playing music from their first album, “Dream of Me” (released December 2011).

Willem van der Merwe

Willem received some training as a tenor at the University of Stellenbosch Conservatorium. Following this he pursued a more academic career and studied Information Science and Psychology. From 2003 onwards he was a lecturer in Sosio-Informatical computer studies at the University of Stellenbosch. His most exciting singing experience during these years was to perform in an International Guinness Beer advertisement.

Louis van der Merwe

Louis (baritone) was a student at the University of Cape Town’s Opera School before he changed to the University of Stellenbosch to study everything from philosophy to French, around economics, and back to political science. He then taught computer literacy, and became involved with the IT department. He might have shocked a few first-year students in class, now that he thinks about it… If you want more info on him, please visit his site at www.louisvdmerwe.com

Willem is seven years older than Louis, even though people sometimes guess it the other way around. (Louis thinks this is because he is bigger.) The brothers have been close since forever, and when they were on the long quiet road in middle of the desert in Namibia on a family holiday, sitting in the back of their father’s old bakkie, singing together just happened. They haven’t looked back since. Through the years Willem and Louis continued living out and developing their passion by singing at concerts, events and a myriad of other occasions. They have been singing full time as SILWER since 2010, as has always been their dream.

SILWER has been performing at various venues and occasions, ranging from weddings and concerts, small theatres, corporate functions and restaurants to music festivals like the KKNK and events like the Nederburg Wine Auction and FIFA World Cup.

Willem lives in Cape Town, and Louis lives in Stellenbosch. They love the Cape.
